Tierrasanta, located in San Diego County, is called the "Island in the Hills" because it is nestled in the hills surrounded by parks or open spaces on all sides. It is bounded on the north by the 52 freeway, on the west by Interstate 15, and on the south by steep canyons overlooking the San Diego River and Mission Valley. It has the feeling of a small town atmosphere while being centrally located in San Diego.

Originally Tierrasanta was part of the Mission San Diego de Alcala Ranch. In 1941 the U.S. military purchased the land to build Camp Elliott, a Marine Corps training facility which was later deactivated in 1946. Tierrasanta was one of the first master planned communities in San Diego has been fully built out since the early 1990's. Families love the Tierrasanta Recreation Center which has lighted sports fields, a swimming pool, tennis courts, a gymnasium, and meeting rooms. There are numerous canyons in Tierrasanta with walking and jogging paths and hiking trails.
